Where were you 10 years ago when the World Trade Center towers in New York City were struck? What were you doing?
I remember distinctly what I was doing. It’s one of those life-changing events that stick in your memory like your first kiss or first car accident. It never leaves you.
For me, I was sitting quietly in my parent’s kitchen eating a bowl of Lucky Charms cereal. When suddenly, my Dad came running out of the bathroom with shaving cream on his face, shouting, “Turn on the TV! The World Trade Center has just been hit by an airplane!”
I watched the news channels for a few minutes and left for work. It was only my second day on the job at Del Sol Headquarters, and I didn’t want to be late. That was 10 years ago, and the feeling in our office that day was subdued, cautious and alert. Del Sol had only 20+ stores worldwide in 2001 and about 30 corporate employees and 110+ external store employees. Del Sol blog…? What’s that?
Fast forward to today, life is good and busy. I’m married with two children, have a mortgage of my own and air travel is a nightmare – and not just because of the long check-in lines. Del Sol has 100+ stores worldwide and 98 corporate employees and 900+ external store employees. We’ve grown and expanded and the sun is still shining on Del Sol stores across the globe.
Across the street from Del Sol Headquarters is a long, beautifully groomed grass field/park, which has been transformed into the 9/11 Healing Field every September for the past 10 years. The field displays one American flag for every victim who lost his life in the terrorist attacks of 9/11. This field is organized and commissioned by Sandy City through the Colonial Flag Foundation.
