There’s nothing quite like a fresh manicure. Whether you take part in a #ManiMonday every week or paint your nails for special occasions, you’ve probably been doing your nails wrong. And, there’s more to glamorous fingertips than just a few coats of color.
Luckily for you, we’ve compiled some beauty hacks that will keep your nails looking like you just walked out of a salon.
It’s All about that Base
Ever wonder why your nail polish chips so easily or why your nails are yellow after removing your polish? Using a base coat will help. By adding the appropriate first layer, you’ll also help extend the wear of your manicure. Your nails have natural oils that make it hard for nail polish to adhere well. A base coat helps seal them.
(Don’t) Shake It!
There’s no way around it. Nail polish settles over time and needs to be mixed together. It’s likely you shake the bottle, thus creating bubbles and trapping air in the container. This can also happen when you pump the brush in and out of the neck. To be safe, roll the bottle in your hands a few times and your nail polish will look brand new and bubble-free.
Less is More
Don’t try to apply your polish in just one swipe. Instead, apply the paint by brushing it down the center, then the right and left sides. Make sure you don’t put it on too thick. You’ll be helpless for a while because the thicker the coat, the longer it takes to dry. You’re more likely to smudge your nails, too. Just be sure to apply a thin coat and repeat as necessary. Your entire nail will get a pop of color, looking flawless.
Signed. Sealed. Delivered.
We’ll let you in on a little secret. A major reason your polish doesn’t chip as easily when you go to the salon compared to your own manicure is this: Seal the edges! Once you finish painting your nails, seal the top edge of your nail with color. Of course, don’t forget a top coat. It’s the biggest key to make your nails look glossy, vibrant and beautiful instead of chipped and faded. Plus, the manicure will last longer. Don’t forget the nail’s edge here, too. Did we mention to apply a top coat?
Let it Rest
Does a relaxing shower sound like a good idea after you finish your manicure? It’s actually not the best intention. Hot water strips away the polish, especially with a fresh coat of paint. For best results, wait at least six hours before you get warm water on your hands.
