Del Sol, Spanish for ‘of the sun’, and such a fitting name for these unique color-changing products, for once the light of the sun touches them, they magically change colors in front of your eyes! I am talking about tee-shirts, hoodies, hair bows, nail polish, jewelry, toys and so much more! Items designed and produced by a company named Del Sol.
If you are curious like me you are probably wondering how in the world this works. It’s simple! NASA began exploring earlier concepts of color change for its Space Program back in the 1970’s and 1980’s, but Del Sol further developed and expanded this technology, eventually developing their own Spectrachrome® color-changing crystals which are used in all of their products today. These crystals are harvested from some of the most colorful and sunniest places on Earth, then engineered for use on Del Sol products. How they work is similar to how a flower reacts to the sun, opening and exposing their hidden colors when exposed to the sun’s rays. A simple concept, but extremely cool!
When I first found the Del Sol website, I was so intrigued with the wide selection of products offered; I could hardly make up my mind! I did finally decide on a tee-shirt, hoodie and a bottle of nail polish, and I love them so much that I have a feeling I will be getting some more!
V-Neck T-Shirt – Koi Fish
This is a pretty T-shirt to begin with, even without the amazing color change! Made from 100% cotton, it is soft and comfortable, and has a beautiful Koi fish and floral design on the front. Out of sunlight, the design appears to be done in a dark, dark purplish color on the white shirt. Once exposed to the rays of the sun though, a beautiful rainbow of color magically, and quickly, blooms. Vibrant blue, yellow, orange and green bring the flowers and fish to life. Once you walk back inside, the colors fade away once again. It is very cool! And no special care is needed as far as washing the shirt. Just machine wash in cold water using non-chlorine bleach if needed, then tumble dry on low heat. Be sure not to iron the design. I love it, and it makes a great conversation piece!
